His background is in existential and humanistic psychology, gestalt therapy, psychoanalytic, behavioral and cognitive psychology, and yogic and Buddhist meditative traditions. He has a Ph.D. in psychology from UCLA and is Emeritus Professor at Sonoma State University where he taught for several decades and served as Psychology Department Chair. After getting a master’s degree in social sciences in the Netherlands, Pieter’s meeting with Sri Harish Johari, an honored teacher for all three authors, led to a major career change. Johari, a master artist as well as jnana yogi, made Pieter his primary art student and taught him a unique wash technique. Thereafter Pieter spent part of every year studying in India honing his art. He developed new approaches that even Harish had never attempted.  Now he travels and presents workshops in Europe and the U.S. each year when he is not busy painting in the Netherlands or India. He did all illustrations for Awakening the Chakras and contributed to the writing.
